How to Install FirstRSS on Wordpress

This is my first day using Wordpress and I’m the type of person who does not often RTFM properly (unless I really have to).

I had just managed to install a plugin called “Search Everything” within a short space of time, and was eager for more juicy things to stick on my pages.

However, I was finding FirstRSS a little bit confusing. The plugin is available from One Nation Under JC and it was easy to get the code uploaded, recognised and activated via the Wordpress Admin > Plugins page. My main problem was the fact that I could not find anything that told me how to use it.

  1. A quick scan (I said I was I’m impatient) of the download page consisted of a lot of comments and responses along the lines of:
“Q: How do you use this thing”
    “A: Read the manual”.
But, I was struggling to find that elusive manual. I could see that there were some instructions within the topmost code-comment of the actual PHP script (/* this type of thing */), but the HTML entities were causing the readability to be a bit difficult. A couple of searches on Google for things like “How to Install FirstRSS on Wordpress” brought me no further. Then, I went back to the plugins page and “Voila!”,”Hey Presto!” - there were some detailed instructions laid out before my very eyes under the “Description” column of the plugins page. Apologies One Nation you did serve us well. . .Thanks for the F’ing manual. ;o)
  2. Even though I followed the instructions about placing [rsslist:URL] into my post it still didin’t seem to work. I tried a few different feeds (the download page explains that not all feeds work so don’t worry if the first one is a dud). They still did not work.
  3. Then I found a post by jschinker on this page: http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1631 . It says to tweak the code on line 99 in the firstRSS.php script, which i did.
  4. BUT - BEFORE I HAD EVEN UPLOADED THE TWEAKED CODE, I REALISED THAT I WAS STUPID TWICE. Although I had activated SideRSS -I had forgotten to Activate the darn FirstRSS.
  5. I put returned the code in firstRSS.php back to its original state (gotta do these things before I forget).
  6. Then, I navigated back to the Wordpress Admin > Plugins > Plugins page and activated FirstRSS (like I should have done in the first place).
  7. I tested my latest post and IT WORKED!!!!
  8. So, one GOLDEN RULE I have now learned on my first day of Wordpressing is:

“Some plugins come bundled. So, always check to ensure that you have activated ALL plugins in the bundle before you go zipping off into Netland to try and find answers to why things are not working.
